AGM and looking ahead
Update from Andrew Bibby, branch secretary:
Our AGM: Tues Feb 21st, 6.30pm
We are holding the branch AGM tomorrow, Tues Feb 21st, at the Square Chapel arts centre in the centre of Halifax (v close to the station - look for the old brick chapel). As previously, we'll be meeting in the comfortable surroundings of the bar, with the meeting beginning at 6.30pm. A warm welcome is extended, particularly to new members of the union - come along and meet other working journalists locally.
This meeting will conclude with the showing of a short new film about the social and labour history collection at the Working-Class Movement Library in Salford. This is an archive of international importance, which is surprisingly little known. Find out what our general secretary Jeremy Dear thinks of it on a visit there recently!
Looking further ahead
There will be a branch meeting on Mon March 20th in the bar area, White Lion, Hebden Bridge, at 7.30pm when motions being presented at this year's conference will be discussed.
In April, we're planning a more ambitious event, when Chris Frost, chair of the union's ethics council and professor of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores Univ, will be our guest speaker. There's a great deal of public interest in the relationship between the media and the general public it claims to serve; this will be a stimulating and perhaps controversial occasion when some of the moral and ethical issues we face as journalists will be up for discussion. More details soon.
